Jo stumbles upon a wallet and decides to return it, hoping for a reward, but her attempt to find the owner leads her into a series of chaotic misadventures at the city hospital and a nursery full of crying babies. From mistaken identity as a patient to narrowly escaping a dose of castor oil, Jo’s well-intentioned quest takes her on a wild, slapstick journey through unexpected trouble.
Jo, a boy nicknamed "Hot-Rod," is desperate to avoid spending time with his visiting cousin Elfreeda, whom he sees as an obstacle to his plans with the gang. To escape, he tricks his friend Cindy into entertaining Elfreeda with games and distractions, only to discover the gang has abandoned their ball game for ice cream at the drugstore—led by the very girl he tried to avoid.
Jo is desperate to cool off in the sweltering heat and tries a series of increasingly impractical solutions—hiding in a refrigerator, daydreaming about cold things, and nearly swimming in the town’s drinking reservoir—before realizing she’s forgotten her bathing suit. After a moment of frustration, she’s reminded by her mother that she doesn’t need one at all, leading to a playful, sun-drenched conclusion.
Jo and Clarence launch a makeshift perfume business using a repurposed garden sprayer, selling whiffs for a penny—only to discover their concoction repels everyone, even flies. When a florist surprisingly offers a quarter for the spray that keeps insects away, they realize their "awful" scent might just have a market after all.
