After a quiet mission to install a radar station on a remote island, Lieutenant Yale and his men are ambushed by a group of Chinese Reds who launch a surprise raid under cover of night. With the element of surprise lost, Yale devises a bold plan to trap the enemy in a narrow valley, using the terrain and a well-timed flare to force their surrender.
Corporal Dave Stein and P.F.C. Lars Larson are left behind when their convoy is forced to split up during a foggy retreat, stranded on a treacherous mountain road with a truck full of heavy mortar shells. As they try to escape, they realize they’ve taken the wrong fork and are now deep in enemy territory—so they rig the truck with grenades and a wire trigger, planning to turn it into a deadly booby trap for any approaching enemy.
In a tense wartime maneuver on the island of Ima Ko, Captain Bill Jason leads a isolated company in a simulated defense exercise, cut off from communication with Formosa for 36 hours. When the "mock" invasion begins ahead of schedule and the attackers open fire with live ammunition, Jason realizes something is terribly wrong—his own troops are being attacked by what appear to be real Chinese Red forces. With no weapons and outnumbered, Jason must use cunning and improvisation to turn the tide, turning the island’s terrain into a deadly trap for the enemy.
