The first issue of Yu-Gi-Oh! (2004) kicks off with Yugi accidentally solving the Millennium Puzzle, unwittingly releasing the spirit of an ancient pharaoh whose presence now shares his body. When danger arises, the pharaoh awakens to defend Yugi—and begins playing the Shadow Games against those who cause harm, starting with the greedy student council president Ushio. Written by Kazuki Takahashi, Magnus Johansson, and Janne Lund, and illustrated by Takahashi with inks by Takahashi, the story blends mystery and ancient magic, with cover art by Takahashi and Louise Winnerhall.
