Helen rejects aspiring composer David because she wants a successful husband. Helen’s younger sister Ruth has a crush on David; three years later, she finds him working a menial job. Ruth convinces David to begin composing again, and uses her savings to finance the debut of his symphony. He’s still in love with Helen, who returns once he’s a success. Later, Helen says David has lost his ambition since Ruth’s been gone. Ruth refuses to help, and when David overhears Helen and proposes to Ruth, she turns him down as well. Her crush is over because he’s “weak.” Ruth is now “free...free!”
