“Love Strikes So Suddenly”

In "Love Strikes So Suddenly," young Bess faces a heart-wrenching choice between practical security and true love when her ambitions clash with Al’s dream of becoming a lawyer. As their relationship strains under the weight of differing paths, Bess finds herself drawn to the comfort of a more settled life—only to realize that her heart still belongs to Al, who has sacrificed his own future to make hers whole. Written by Joe Gill and illustrated by Tony Tallarico, with inks by Jon D'Agostino and a striking cover by Dick Giordano and Jon D'Agostino, this 1956 Charlton classic captures the bittersweet ache of growing up and choosing love with honesty and grace.

Bess wants Al to take a job in the garment industry with his uncle rather than spend years in law school, but he says “law’s been my life’s ambition.” They break up. Bess dates middle-aged Henry, who offers her luxury and security, but she can’t forget Al. Al shows up: he quit school and went to work to make Bess happy. She is “ashamed of my cheap ideals” and makes Al go back to school to achieve his dream. They get married.
