X-Men #5
X-Men #5 from Semic S.A.'s 1992 French series is the issue that delivered the French-language premiere of X-Men (vol. 2) #8 — the comic in which Bella Donna Boudreaux, Gambit's estranged wife and leader of the New Orleans Assassins Guild, first appears. Created by Scott Lobdell and Jim Lee, Bella Donna was a pivotal figure in unraveling Gambit's criminal past and the Thieves Guild / Assassins Guild mythology that shaped his character for decades. By packaging this landmark chapter inside a kiosk-distributed anthology, Semic put one of the era's most consequential Marvel character introductions into the hands of an entire generation of French readers who had no other direct access to the American direct-market original.
In "Bec et ongles !", Wolvie races to rescue Mai from the grip of Black Shadow, only to face a terrifying new threat: a mutant whose power births a swarm of dark, monstrous entities. Marv Wolfman's tense script and John Buscema’s dynamic art bring the chaos to life, while Jim Lee and Scott Williams deliver a striking cover that captures the issue’s escalating dread.
In "Ombre Noire, Ombre Blanche, Chapitre IX : Forcing !", Wolverine races to rescue Mai from Black Shadow’s grasp, only to face a chilling new threat: the mutant behind the Shadows. As he charges forward, a tide of dark, monstrous forms rises to block his path—leaving the outcome hanging in the balance.
In the shadowed tension of a dying master, Wolverine must choose between vengeance and salvation as he faces the Black Shadows—his claws drawn, his resolve tested—while trying to protect Mai from the encroaching darkness.

The 1992 Semic S.A. X-Men series launched in December 1992 as a kiosk-format anthology, reprinting recent American Marvel material in French translation alongside concurrent Wolverine backup strips drawn from Marvel Comics Presents. The parent company, Semic S.A., was the French successor to Éditions Lug — itself the original French licensee for Marvel Comics since 1969 — after the Scandinavian Semic Group acquired Lug in 1989 and continued its Marvel reprint program. Issue #5, on sale August 1993, reprinted X-Men vol. 2 #8 (cover-dated May 1992) as its lead story, meaning French readers encountered the Bella Donna debut roughly fourteen months after the American original.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Published by Semic S.A. (France), on sale August 1993; part of the 1992-launched French kiosk anthology series.
- Primary reprint: X-Men vol. 2 #8 (Marvel, May 1992) — the first appearance of Bella Donna Boudreaux, Gambit's wife and Assassins Guild leader, created by writer Scott Lobdell and artist Jim Lee.
- Bella Donna Boudreaux is a member of the New Orleans Assassins Guild whose star-crossed marriage to Gambit (Remy LeBeau) of the rival Thieves Guild underpins a major strand of his characterisation.
- The reprinted story also features a confrontation between Bishop and Gambit, and a guest appearance by Ghost Rider (Daniel Ketch), whose participation continues into Ghost Rider #26.
- Secondary content includes Wolverine backup strips reprinted from Marvel Comics Presents, consistent with the anthology format used throughout the Semic X-Men run.
- The full cast of the reprinted X-Men issue spans both the Blue and Gold teams: Cyclops, Wolverine, Gambit, Rogue, Jubilee, Beast, Psylocke, Storm, Jean Grey, Archangel, Colossus, Iceman, and Professor X, along with Bishop and Forge.
- Semic S.A. was the French arm of the pan-European Semic Group (itself of Scandinavian origin), which held the Marvel translation licence in France throughout this period and distributed titles through newsstand/kiosk channels rather than the specialist direct market.
- Paired issues of this French series were later collected in hardcover 'Album relié' editions; issues #5 and #6 appeared together in Album relié N°3, published January 1994.
