The issue was plotted by Jim Lee and scripted by Scott Lobdell, with Lee also supplying pencils on the lead story and Mark Texeira handling the backup; Bob Wiacek inked the main feature, with Marie Javins on colors and Bob Harras editing under editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco. Lee was already in the process of organizing what would become Image Comics at the time of this issue's production, and the creative strain of simultaneously plotting both X-Men and Uncanny X-Men while preparing his departure is noted in contemporary commentary — one fan-historian observed that Lee's later issues showed the pull of those competing obligations. An uncredited inking contribution by Scott Williams appears on the issue's closing two-page poster spread, where Williams signed alongside Lee despite receiving no formal credit in the indicia.
