X-Force #51 is a double debut issue that quietly punches above its weight in the mid-1990s X-Men line. It marks the first appearance of Risque (Gloria Dolores Muñoz), a Cuban-Seminole mutant who went on to serve as Warpath's primary love interest through nearly fifty subsequent issues of the series, representing a notably rare dual Native American and Latina identity within Marvel's mutant roster of the era. Simultaneously, it records the first time Tabitha Smith formally adopts the codename Meltdown — a deliberate character reinvention triggered by the emotional fallout of Sabretooth's betrayal and her own guilt over Psylocke's injuries, representing one of the more psychologically grounded identity shifts in the series' run. History

The issue was written by Jeph Loeb, who helmed X-Force from issues #44 through #61, with pencils by Luciano Lima and inks by a rotating team of Chad Hunt, Robert Jones, Rober Quijano, and Vince Russell. It was released on December 28, 1995 with a cover date of February 1996, during a period when Loeb was simultaneously writing Cable and plotting X-Man, carving out a distinct corner of the post-Age of Apocalypse X-line. Bob Harras served as editor-in-chief at Marvel at the time, and the issue's story — titled 'Reflections in the Night' — functioned as a deliberate decompression chapter following the high-action Holocaust and Sebastian Shaw confrontation of issues #49–50, using the quieter aftermath to pay off a multi-issue character arc for Tabitha Smith and to launch the Warpath/Risque subplot that would simmer through the title for years.
