Wow Comics #9

As the second (or third, depending on on-sale date ordering) appearance of Mary Batson in her caped identity, the issue established the character's storytelling formula: holiday heart, ensemble Marvel Family cameos, and Otto Binder's signature wide-eyed optimism rendered in Marc Swayze's fluid, expressive linework. Mary Marvel was among the very first female counterparts of a major male superhero, predating Supergirl — herself co-created by Binder — by more than a decade, and this issue's launch of her ongoing strip was the decisive editorial commitment that proved the character could anchor her own franchise. The issue also captures a pivotal Fawcett moment when several Golden Age features — particularly the Spooks strip — reached their conclusion, marking a generational handoff as the Marvel Family era took full hold of the book.
Wow Comics #9 is an anthology featuring multiple superhero stories. "Mr. Scarlet and Pinky" face off against a mysterious mastermind in "The Mystery of the Make-Believe Mastermind," discovering their opponent to be a gentleman criminal linked to the underworld. The Phantom Eagle confronts Nazi forces over threatened seaport territories, discovering a secret hangar containing Mickey Malone's plane of his own design with "Phantom Eagle Cleaning Spark Plugs" planted inside. "Commando Yank and the Terrior Toy" depicts Commando Yank and fellow soldiers battling enemy forces, including encounters with Nazi commandos in Norway and a mysterious toy that serves as a weapon against them.
A young woman named Mary Batson is reading "The Night Before Christmas" when she spots figures descending her chimney on Christmas Eve—but these aren't bringing gifts, they're stealing toy-band players from the house where she lives with Mrs. Bromfield and the orphan children. When Mary transforms into Mary Marvel to stop the thieves disguised as Santa Clauses, she discovers Captain Marvel, Mr. Scarlet, and Pinky are also on the case, leading to a thrilling battle that reveals the toys are actually hiding smuggled jewels. It's a Christmas tale where holiday magic meets superhero action, as Mary and her allies work to protect the children and expose a clever smuggling scheme.
When a phony subway entrance sparks a clever crime wave across the city, Mr. Scarlet and Pinky race to uncover who's behind the scheme—only to find the trail leads in an unexpected direction. As Brian Butler struggles to rebuild his law practice after a public firing, a chance encounter with a paper salesman provides the crucial clue that sends the dynamic duo on their investigation. With Miss Wade occupied as a night nurse and the days growing darker, Mr. Scarlet must piece together how a mastermind could orchestrate such cunning crimes from the shadows.
A young pilot too inexperienced for the Air Corps finds his chance for glory when the Phantom Eagle's secret hangar sits unguarded—but first he must contend with an unlikely obstacle: Katie, an Australian mascot kangaroo determined to keep him grounded. When a surprise Japanese attack leaves the airfield defenseless and the squadrons engaged miles away, Mickey Malone's resolve is tested as both duty and a stubborn animal stand between him and the battle overhead.
When Dr. Sven Nordlung, a captive scientist in a Nazi-occupied Norwegian castle, develops plans for an unsmashable tank, he reaches out to Commando Yank for help—but is murdered before he can hand them over. Now Commando Yank must infiltrate the heavily guarded fortress of the traitorous Bjorne Sondergunn, navigate a castle full of armed guards, and hunt down the hidden plans before the Nazis secure them. It's a race against time deep in enemy territory, where one misstep could mean capture or death.

Writer Otto Binder and artist Marc Swayze co-created Mary Marvel for Captain Marvel Adventures #18 (cover-dated December 1942), and Fawcett editor Rod Reed immediately commissioned her solo strip for Wow Comics, with Swayze recalled dropping his regular Captain Marvel assignment to produce the character designs — designs that were accepted without revision on the first pass. Swayze modeled Mary's appearance and personality on actress Judy Garland, giving the character a warm, approachable presence well suited to the feature's fantasy-tinged, child-friendly tone. The inaugural Wow Comics story, scripted by Binder and drawn by Swayze, was a Christmas-set caper in which Mary foils jewel smugglers hiding gems inside toy soldiers — a thematically appropriate debut for a character whose entire publishing identity was rooted in warmth and holiday adventure.
