Greg Pak wrote the issue as a direct continuation of his own Planet Hulk run on Incredible Hulk vol. 2, and Marvel paired him with John Romita Jr. — inked by Klaus Janson — to give the series the kinetic, bruising visual weight the premise demanded. The crossover was announced at New York Comic Con in early 2007 and was positioned as Marvel's summer event following Civil War, with the prologue one-shot (written by Peter David) shipping in May 2007 and the main series beginning in June. The first issue sold out quickly enough that Marvel rushed a second printing with a variant cover by Romita Jr., and the five-issue series ultimately spawned three dedicated limited-series tie-ins plus crossovers into a dozen ongoing titles running from summer through a delayed fall finish.
