About this Collection

This collection reprints the 2019 Winter Soldier series, following Bucky Barnes as he seeks redemption and a new path forward after his past as a brainwashed assassin. The story explores his struggle to reconcile his violent history with his desire to protect the innocent, featuring intense action and character-driven drama. Written by Kyle Higgins and drawn by Rod Reis, the volume collects issues #1-5 of the series.

In "Second Chances: Part One," the Winter Soldier—now trying to rebuild his life under a new identity—works quietly in Shelbyville, Indiana, aiding those in witness protection. When he reaches out to a former Hydra agent seeking redemption, the organization responds with a deadly message: an assassin dressed exactly like the Soldier was in his Bucky Barnes days. Written by Kyle Higgins and illustrated by Rod Reis, with colors and inks by Reis and letters by Clayton Cowles, this issue captures a tense, personal chapter in a man trying to outrun his past. The cover, by Rod Reis, reflects the weight of that legacy.

The Soldier tries to redeem himself by helping others in a witness protection program, people hiding from the likes of Hydra and organized crime. To this purpose he has relocated to Shelbyville, Indiana. But when reaching out to a former Hydra agent with buyer's remorse, the secret organization sends in their assassin, a young man dressed the way the Soldier was when he still called himself Bucky.
