When their plane is hit and damaged during the mission, pilot Labal must fight to keep the aircraft airborne while navigator Lt. Erwin helps manage the emergency. After an intense struggle involving a dead co-pilot and Japanese fighter interference, Labal makes a desperate emergency landing, and the crew narrowly escapes before two Japanese Zeroes attack, but American luck allows them to scatter safely.
Technical Sergeant Doug Labat, the flight engineer aboard the Liberator bomber "Old 26," proves his mettle during a harrowing mission over Jap-held Burma when sixteen Zeroes attack the plane on November 11th. As cannon fire tears through the aircraft, the pilot and co-pilot are wounded, forcing Labat to take the controls and hold the damaged bomber steady while continuing to fight off enemy fighters. His quick thinking and steady hand keep the crew alive long enough to nurse the crippled plane toward an emergency landing.
