Sumi tells Joe the story of two brothers blown off course during a fishing trip who discover a mysterious island inhabited by natives who worship a volcanic god called Walla-Habi. Two white men later arrive and convince the brothers to help retrieve gold hidden in the volcano's cave as part of an annual monsoon ritual. The brothers escape with a large boat to reach the strange island, but encounter Arabs who capture Wild Boy and enslave him with shackles. Wild Boy breaks free with help from a panther named Daro and uses an elephant to assist him, while a hunter named Hodges pursues him; the story culminates in a confrontation where the hunters attempt to shoot a lion to prove their prowess, only to have Wild Boy intervene to save the animal.
