Mr. Sinister's X-Men battle Magneto and win but Sinister is still displeased with his team as they can't seem to get along with each other. He sends them to Cairo to contact a new mutant but they run across a rival team, the "X" Men. Cyclops feels an instant affinity for Jean Grey and stays behind to keep Sabretooth from killing her when Sinister calls him home. Thus, he is not back at the base to protect Sinister when Magneto and the Brotherhood attack. With Sinister dead, Cyclops and Havok decide to join Xavier and his "X" Men. Of course, this is all part of Sinister's master plan.
