About this Issue

West Coast Avengers #5 (vol. 4, March 2025) represents a key narrative pivot in Gerry Duggan's redemption-themed run: it is the issue where Firestar publicly acknowledges, to her teammates, that she cannot function as a hero without first seeking professional help for the PTSD she carries from her time inside ORCHIS — a rare, unguarded mental-health moment in a mainstream Avengers title. The issue also deepens the series' central structural tension by threading at least five simultaneous plot threads (the Flag-Smasher attack, Firestar's arc, the Church of Ultron, the mainline Avengers' growing alarm over Ultron's roster spot, and a nascent Firestar/Blue Bolt dynamic) into a single chapter, deliberately evoking the multi-plot sprawl of classic Bronze Age Avengers storytelling while grounding it in contemporary character psychology. As the first appearance of the Secret Empire-era 'Flag-Smasher' (the cosmic-cube-born dark double of Steve Rogers) within this volume, it also connects the 2024 series' villain landscape back to a much earlier chapter of Marvel continuity.

History

The 2024 West Coast Avengers series — of which issue #5 is a part — was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 and positioned by Marvel as a celebration of the franchise's 40th anniversary. Writer Gerry Duggan came to the project fresh off his run on Invincible Iron Man and his extended work with Firestar in X-Men, giving him a strong pre-existing creative relationship with two of the book's central characters; he described the project as 'one of my biggest Marvel swings yet,' centered on the theme of redemption. Artist Danny Kim, colorist Arthur Hesli, and letterer VC's Joe Caramagna formed the core production team across the run, with editor Alanna Smith overseeing the series; early issues sold well enough that issue #2 received a second printing before it had even reached shops.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released March 12, 2025 (cover-dated May 2025); written by Gerry Duggan, art by Danny Kim, colors by Arthur Hesli, letters by VC's Joe Caramagna, edited by Alanna Smith.
  • The issue brings back Flag-Smasher — specifically the cosmic-cube-created 'dark Steve Rogers' version introduced during the Secret Empire storyline — as the primary antagonist, attacking a nuclear weapons convoy.
  • Firestar's central character beat: she publicly admits to her teammates that she needs professional help to deal with PTSD stemming from her covert role in dismantling ORCHIS during the Krakoa era — the emotional climax of the issue.
  • Blue Bolt (Tommy Watt, a.k.a. Killerwatt), the all-new character who debuted in West Coast Avengers vol. 4 #1 (November 2024), continues his role as a prison-work-release Avenger; his antagonistic-but-genuine friendship with Firestar is a major ongoing thread.
  • The mainline Avengers — including Sam Wilson's Captain America, Storm, Scarlet Witch, Vision, and Wonder Man — appear or are referenced as growing increasingly uneasy about Iron Man's decision to include Ultron on the roster, setting up the series' next major conflict.
  • This is the fourth volume of West Coast Avengers published by Marvel; the series launched in November 2024, timed to the franchise's 40th anniversary (the original limited series debuted September 1984).
  • Three variant covers were published for the issue: a standard cover by Ben Harvey, a 1:25 incentive variant by Jan Bazaldua, and a Todd Nauck 'Iconic' variant; a Luciano Vecchio variant was also produced.
  • The issue is rated T+ (ages 13 and up) under Marvel's content guidelines, reflecting the series' mix of superhero action and mature character themes including addiction, trauma, and cult dynamics.
