West Coast Avengers #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeWest Coast Avengers vol. 4 #1 marks the fourth time Marvel has launched a series under this banner — and the most tonally distinct, structuring the team around the idea of super-villain rehabilitation rather than traditional heroics. The issue carries the first appearance of Blue Bolt (Chad Braxton), a brand-new, fully original character created specifically for this volume, making it the sole debut appearance in the modern Marvel era to grow directly out of Gerry Duggan's prior Iron Man run. By placing a homicidal android like Ultron inside a functioning Avengers team as a 'case study' in redemption, the series extends a conversation about moral accountability that stretches back to the franchise's own history with reformed rogues, while Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) and Firestar serve as the skeptical conscience keeping that question alive.

The series was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 and launched on November 27, 2024 — the fourth volume to carry the West Coast Avengers name, following the 1984 limited series, the 1985–1994 ongoing, and the 2018 Kelly Thompson run. Writer Gerry Duggan seeded the team's formation in his concurrent Iron Man ongoing before spinning it off here, with Danny Kim as series artist throughout; Duggan described the villain-rehabilitation premise as a deliberate continuation of themes he had explored in his earlier Uncanny Avengers and X-Men runs. The first arc (issues #1–5) was collected as West Coast Avengers Vol. 1: The Gospel of Ultron.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Written by Gerry Duggan with art by Danny Kim; cover by Ben Harvey (standard edition), with variant covers by JeeHyung Lee, Adam Hughes (foil), Joshua Cassara, Ron Lim, Stanley 'Artgerm' Lau, Gerardo Sandoval, Sean Galloway, Greg Land (Previews exclusive), and a Danny Kim design variant, among others — the issue shipped with at least 15 variant covers plus a second-printing wave.
- First appearance of Blue Bolt (Chad Braxton), an all-new character created by Gerry Duggan and Danny Kim: a lightning-powered, career henchman placed with the Avengers through a prison-release program, marking him as an entirely original addition to the Marvel Universe.
- Ultron appears as an active, apparently reformed member of the new West Coast Avengers roster — a radical reimagining of one of the Avengers' oldest and most lethal villains, framed as the team's primary 'test case' for super-villain rehabilitation.
- The core team assembled by Iron Man (Tony Stark) and War Machine (Jim Rhodes) consists of Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Firestar (Angelica Jones), Ultron, and Blue Bolt — with Spider-Woman and Firestar explicitly positioned as the skeptics who doubt the rehabilitation premise.
- This is Volume 4 of the West Coast Avengers franchise; it launched in November 2024 and concluded at issue #10 in August 2025, matching the run length of the 2018 Kelly Thompson volume — both cut off at 10 issues.
- The series was teased and set up within Duggan's preceding Iron Man solo run before being spun off as its own title, making issue #1 the payoff to a cross-series narrative setup.
- Issues #1–5 were collected in the trade paperback West Coast Avengers Vol. 1: The Gospel of Ultron (ISBN 978-1302960339, 2025), with issues #6–10 collected in Vol. 2: War of Ultron (ISBN 978-1302962869, 2025).
- The large villain roster indexed for this issue — including Vulture, Rhino, Sandman, Scorpion, Electro, Bullseye, Taskmaster, Tombstone, Kraven the Hunter, Black Cat, and Screwball — suggests the issue depicts or references a broader criminal landscape that contextualizes the team's rehabilitation mission, though specific scene-by-scene roles for each villain require direct issue confirmation.
