About this Issue

Werewolf by Night: Red Band #9 (April 2025) is a narrative pivot point in Jason Loo's ongoing mature-readers run — the issue that, by Marvel's own promotional framing, sets the trajectory for the following year of the series by forcing both Jack Russell and Jake Gomez toward open conflict with each other and with the Darkholder alliance led by Lilith, the Hood, and Deathwatch. It is part of a historically notable publishing experiment: the Red Band line represents Marvel's most explicit post-Comics Code attempt to sustain a polybagged, Parental Advisory horror series as a standard ongoing rather than a prestige one-shot, continuing a tradition that stretches back to the character's 50-year publishing history. The convergence of both Werewolves of the Marvel Universe in a single escalating storyline also marks the first time the Jack Russell and Jake Gomez mantles have been placed in direct narrative opposition at this scale within a shared ongoing.

History

The Red Band series was conceived by writer Jason Loo — who had already established the post-Blood Hunt status quo in the Werewolf by Night: Blood Hunt one-shot — with artist Sergio Dávila, whose prior Marvel work included Venom and Thor. Marvel announced the series in April 2024 as an explicit-content ongoing, polybagged for retail and carrying a Parental Advisory (15+) rating, spinning directly out of the Blood Hunt event's consequences for Jack Russell's lycanthropic transformation. Editor Devin Lewis oversaw the run, with covers throughout by painter E.M. Gist and colors by Alex Sinclair; by issue #9 the series was deep into a Darkholder/Lilith arc that had been building since the first issue's introduction of Elder Dorgana.
