Weird Science #3
This third volume of Diábolo Ediciones' 2022 'Weird Science' series continues the Spanish-language collection of classic EC Comics science fiction tales. It reprints a selection of the original 1950s stories that blend speculative concepts with the publisher's signature twist endings and moralistic undertones.
In "Una inversión de futuro," Dr. Brewster’s revolutionary serum 129-A offers the ultimate escape—inducing indefinite suspended animation in any living being. When Lloyd and his lover, trapped in a loveless marriage, use the serum to skip ahead five centuries, they awaken to a world transformed, only to find their long-awaited peace now threatened by a consequence they never foresaw.
In the year 2963, Jerome Kraft arrives on a distant planet with only four years’ worth of supplies, tasked with cataloging life forms. When his ship is destroyed and all records lost, he finds himself stranded among a primitive society that sees his advanced knowledge as divine. As he heals the sick and feeds the hungry, the people proclaim him their Savior—but when the high priest denounces his origins as heresy and demands he serve only the powerful, Jerome must choose between obedience and his own conscience. Centuries later, a new expedition discovers a civilization shaped by the legacy of that forgotten man, where a curious symbol—once a stretch rack—has become a sacred relic.
In "Reza tus oraciones," two intelligent preying mantises arrive on Earth to study humanity and plan an invasion—only to be utterly terrified when they encounter a photo of pinned mantis specimens in a collector’s display. Convinced that Earth is overrun by giant predators who hunt their kind, they hastily retreat to their home world, leaving behind a planet they now believe is far too dangerous to conquer.
In "¡Va a haber algunos cambios!", a space crew lands on the alien world of Gastropodia, where the inhabitants live in igloo-like shells and move with quiet grace. Commander Morrison finds himself drawn to the enigmatic Luwana, and as the others prepare to return to Earth, he faces a choice that upends everything he thought he knew about love and identity.
In "¡La verdad interior!", a mysterious phenomenon baffles authorities: criminals die with vital organs missing, while gravely ill patients miraculously heal. When the enigmatic Smedley Throbbins is brought in, he reveals a shocking truth—using techniques beyond our dimension, he's been transferring organs between bodies without a single incision. His methods defy science, and when the truth is uncovered, he vanishes into another realm, leaving behind a mystery that defies explanation.
In the year 2152, aliens invade Earth after stealing the brain of a man they believe to be Napoleon Bonaparte, only to discover his delusions made them mistake Earth’s technology for that of the early 1800s. Misled by the man’s fractured mind, they plan an attack based on outdated assumptions—until Earth’s defenses respond with a precision that exposes their error. The truth behind the man’s identity and the aliens’ miscalculation sets off a chain of events that challenges both sides’ understanding of strategy and reality.
In "Heredarán la Tierra," a nuclear leak sparks an unexpected evolution in rats, setting off a chain of events that leads two scientists to uncover a startling future: long after humanity's decline, intelligent, bipedal rats have risen to dominance, speaking English and ruling a world where humans and cats no longer exist.
In "¡Los marcianos!", a team of Earth explorers lands on a desolate Mars, only to uncover an ancient city buried beneath the red dust. Inside its ruins, they encounter a haunting hologram of a human battling a Martian — a scene that takes on a chilling new meaning when they realize they’re inside a forgotten movie theater. The line between fiction and reality begins to blur as they uncover the truth behind the film’s twisted narrative.
In "Cautividad," two mineralogists camping near a uranium find in Monument Valley are suddenly thrown into a steamy prehistoric jungle after a generator explosion. Stranded in a strange, ancient world, they soon realize they’re not alone—alien visitors have arrived, and the jungle is part of a vast galactic zoo where their ancestors are being used as food for prehistoric creatures.
Melvin, a lonely man yearning for connection, receives a mysterious package from the year 2952—unasked for, unexplained—inside which lies a De Lux Personal Harem Kit, complete with five beautifully dehydrated harem girls. The arrival throws his quiet life into chaos, sparking a whirlwind of confusion, curiosity, and something dangerously close to hope.
In "¡Como ganado!", a group of humans is taken by alien horse-like creatures to a strange new world where they're forced to eat endlessly. A lone cowboy warns his fellow captives they're being treated like livestock, but his words fall on skeptical ears—until the truth becomes undeniable when they're herded into a sealed room.
In a world where planes keep crashing and flight has been banned, a scientist uncovers a shocking truth: aliens are sabotaging human progress to keep us from reaching the stars. When he tries to expose the truth, the aliens arrive to silence him—permanently.
In the sci-fi tale "¡Semilla del espacio!", newlyweds Enid and Lon embark on a honeymoon voyage through the stars, only for Enid’s health to falter under the strain of space travel. Forced to land on an uncharted planet, they face a harsh reality: Enid can’t survive another launch. While Lon returns to Earth to fetch supplies, he encounters a mysterious alien—only to discover a truth that shatters everything he thought he knew.
In "¡La herencia del pasado!", Seymour’s ambition takes a dangerous turn when a mysterious relative from 2046 offers him a shortcut to wealth—through a time-traveling scheme involving a murder from the past. As he grapples with the moral cost of sudden fortune, the plan begins to unravel in ways he never anticipated.
In a bizarre twist of democracy, a nation tired of uninspiring politicians unexpectedly elects "Allie," the beloved alligator handpuppet from a children's show, as president. What seems like a harmless joke quickly spirals into a terrifying reality when it's revealed that Allie is actually a parasitic creature using the puppet as a vessel—and the election was just the beginning of a larger invasion.
In "¡La edad del pavo!", every few centuries, alien visitors descend to Earth, abducting humans under a veil of mass hypnosis—erasing their existence from memory before carrying them off to a distant feast. The story follows the quiet, ordinary moments before the sky darkens, and the world forgets what it’s lost.
In "El monstruo de la isla," a Broadway promoter chasing legend sails to a remote island, drawn by whispers of a fearsome creature. What he finds is not a beast, but an alien envoy—peaceful, misunderstood, and carrying a message meant for humanity. The journey from island to New York sets off a chain of revelations that could change everything, if only they can understand the truth before it's too late.
In "¡Los largos años!", Earthlings exploring a desolate, war-scarred Mars stumble upon an aging scientist living in isolation with his young family. After the scientist dies suddenly, the visitors uncover a hidden cemetery—and the chilling truth that the family he cherished was never real, but carefully crafted androids built to preserve his sanity in the silence of a dead world.
¡Un final explosivo! follows the crew of Rocketship #269 as they approach a colossal planet of extreme density, drawn to its imposing presence. Curiosity leads them to land on one of its satellite moons—only to quickly discover the surface hides a deadly secret.
In "¡El paralelo!", Calvin, haunted by the eerie sense that he’s relived this moment before, confides in his wife that a parallel world might exist—one that mirrors every detail of his life at this very instant. Driven by a desperate need to reclaim his fate, he devises a plan to cross over and eliminate his other self, believing that only then can he truly be free.
In "¡Desmontado!", an electrical engineer discovers a mysterious metal object inside a derelict flying saucer and brings it back to his station to dismantle. What starts as a curious investigation takes a chilling turn when the object cries out in pain—revealing it's alive. Soon after, another alien, a living robot, arrives and begins disassembling the engineer, driven by the same relentless curiosity to understand what makes humans tick.
