Weird Love #2
In "Yes, I Was an Escort Girl," Eugene Hughes and Sal Finocchiaro deliver a quietly devastating story of love and perception, set against the backdrop of a Pacific island during wartime. Lanu’s fragile hope and quiet strength are laid bare as Jon’s letters reveal a man searching for meaning in the women he once knew—only to find that true beauty was always within her. The haunting final panel, rendered with stark clarity by the interior team and highlighted on a cover by Leon Winik and Ray Osrin, lingers long after the last page.

Lanu meets Jon when he’s stationed on her Pacific island during the war. He wants to marry her, but she insists that he go home and think it over. During his absence, Jon writes to Lanu about various girlfriends: Rita, Mona, and Susan. When Jon returns, he explains why each of these beautiful women didn’t earn his love: “they were ugly compared to you—-for they didn’t love!” Jon will marry Lanu: “to John, I too was beautiful!” In the last panel, Lanu’s unattractive face is shown.
