Vermillion #8

DC's Helix imprint was home to some genuinely unsettling work in 1997, and this eighth issue of Vermillion showcases why. John Totleben's cover depicts a dark-haired figure in a flowing cape lunging through a gnarled, otherworldly forest, surrounded by reaching claws and twisted vegetation that seem to close in from every direction. The atmosphere is tense and organic, with Totleben's intricate linework giving the alien landscape a creeping, almost sentient menace that pairs beautifully with Lucius Shepard's literary sensibilities.
