Valentine #17 July 1965
In "Cuttin' Out," a poignant summer romance takes a sharp turn when Zena, torn between her family's disapproval and her feelings for Jeff, convinces him to run away on the final morning of their holiday. But as the sun rises, it's not Jeff who arrives at the beach— it's his brother Brian, setting off a quiet storm of secrets and shifting loyalties. With heartfelt emotion and stark, expressive art by Félix Mas, this 1965 issue captures a moment of teenage reckoning in a town where family legacies weigh heavy. Cover by Félix Mas.

Jeff's father owns nearly half of the town and his family doesn't think Zena is suitable for him. Zena's parents don't want her to see Jeff because his father had driven her father out of business when they were kids. But they see each other anyway. Zena knew Jeff was weak but she persuaded him that they should run away together on the last morning of their holiday. When the day comes, it is Brian who shows up at the beach, not his brother Jeff.
