Eight years earlier, Ruth's father had lost his job as head book-keeper when it was discovered that he had embezzled some money to get some extra nice things for Ruth and her mother. Ruth had vowed to make him forget by becoming the success he couldn't be. The boss's son was sweet on Ruth from the start, but she refused his marriage proposals until she could get her father's old job. She gets the promotion and is ready to marry Tom, but discovers that she is taking over Tom's position as he has taken a six-year job overseas with a different firm.
