“Between Here and There A Prelude”

Dave Johnson's cover for this seventh issue of Vertigo's Unknown Soldier sets an uneasy, atmospheric tone: a bandage-wrapped figure crouches in the foreground while three armed soldiers emerge from tall grass above, rendered in muted golds and earthy browns that evoke the tension of a landscape both beautiful and dangerous. The arc title "Between Here and There" floats between the two groups, visually separating hunter from hunted — or perhaps something more ambiguous. With Brian Azzarello on record calling Joshua Dysart and Alberto Ponticelli's work "the best horror book of the year," this 2009 Vertigo series is clearly firing on all cylinders.
