“Death Sub, U.S.N.”

Joe Kubert's cover for Unknown Soldier #263 plunges you straight into underwater dread — a diver in full scuba gear descends into a ghastly yellow-green deep, surrounded by skeletal, zombie-like figures closing in from every direction. The tagline "…Dares Enter the 'Death Sub, U.S.N.!'" promises the kind of high-stakes wartime suspense DC did so well in 1982, and this issue also packs in backup features starring Tomahawk and the Balloon Buster for good measure.

Tomahawk is found guilty of attempting to assassinate General Washington and sentenced to hang. He realizes too late that he's been framed by his old enemy Lord Shilling, a master of disguise who has been serving as the prosecutor.
