The arc "A Battle of Little Note" opens with this striking Vertigo entry from June 2010, written by Joshua Dysart with art by Alberto Ponticelli. Dave Johnson's cover does the heavy lifting atmospherically — a close, almost oppressive portrait of the bandage-wrapped Unknown Soldier, rifle at his shoulder, rendered in earthy ochres and deep browns that feel as worn and weathered as the soldier himself. Publishers Weekly called the series "thought provoking, tense and holds nothing back," and this brooding image makes a convincing case for every word of that.
