Sokal's world-weary duck detective, Inspector Canardo, shares the cover with a wild-haired, round-spectacled bird of distinctly gruff demeanor — the two figures framed against a lush tangle of pale roses that adds an oddly elegant touch to the scene. Un Con en Hiver (A Fool in Winter) promises exactly the kind of sardonic, noir-tinged atmosphere that has made this long-running Casterman series a staple of Franco-Belgian crime comics. This 2018 entry, the twenty-fifth installment in the series, is a fine invitation to spend some time in Canardo's gloriously cynical company.
