“Don't Answer the Phone!”

In "Don't Answer the Phone!", a quiet evening turns surreal when a man’s family vanishes without a trace, leaving only a cryptic message from a stranger claiming they’re from another dimension—waiting for a lightning strike strong enough to return them home. Written and illustrated by Marvin Stein, this eerie 1975 tale from Uncanny Tales #9 builds tension with a single, unnerving premise, while Ed Hannigan’s cover pencils and Klaus Janson’s inks capture the story’s unsettling tone in a striking image.

A man's family disappears one evening and a stranger explains to the town sheriff that they are from another dimension waiting for a lightning bolt of sufficient strength to send them all back to their home dimension. The sheriff thinks the story is nonsense but suddenly a powerful lightning bolt flashes and both the stranger and the man have disappeared as well.
