“Like a Chicken Without a Head”

In "Like a Chicken Without a Head," a brilliant but ridiculed doctor pushes the boundaries of medical science with a radical procedure that keeps a severed head alive through artificial means. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated with eerie precision by Reed Crandall, the story unfolds with a chilling blend of ambition and isolation. The haunting final moment, rendered with stark intensity, is captured on the cover by Gil Kane and Tom Palmer.

A doctor recommends a surgical procedure whereby the head is removed from the body and the heart is kept beating by artificial means so as to lengthen the time available for surgery. No one listens to him though, and being tired of being mocked, he destroys his formula. As he removes his head from his torso, he says to himself "The world isn't ready for us."
