Writer Brian K. Vaughan — already celebrated for Y: The Last Man and Runaways — became the third writer on Ultimate X-Men after Brian Michael Bendis's twelve-issue run, and Ultimate X-Men #58 falls squarely in the middle of his twenty-issue tenure. The issue was penciled by Steve Dillon, with Stuart Immonen providing the cover; Dillon was an unusual artistic choice for the Ultimate line, and his expressive, grounded style drew specific notice from readers collecting the eventual 'Hard Lessons' trade.
