About this Issue

Ultimate X-Men #58 is the first appearance of the Ultimate Universe's Syndicate — psi-resistant conjoined twins Luke and Matthew — and also the first cameo appearance of an Ultimate Universe version of Warlock, making it a genuine debut issue for two new characters within Earth-1610 continuity. The issue is equally notable as a Professor X spotlight story, a structural rarity in the series: stripped of his X-Men and his telepathic edge (Syndicate's interlinked brain matter blocks psychic control while their shared heart generates electromagnetic pulses that kill electronic systems), Xavier must outmaneuver a bank siege using only wit and human cooperation. Within Brian K. Vaughan's acclaimed run on the title, the issue represents his ongoing strategy of centering stories on characters Millar and Bendis had left underdeveloped — a creative philosophy that critics and readers recognized as the hallmark of his twenty-issue tenure. It opens the 'Hard Lessons' arc, later collected in trade paperback, that leads directly into the introductions of Ultimate Lady Deathstrike and the return of Wolverine.

History

Writer Brian K. Vaughan — already celebrated for Y: The Last Man and Runaways — became the third writer on Ultimate X-Men after Brian Michael Bendis's twelve-issue run, and Ultimate X-Men #58 falls squarely in the middle of his twenty-issue tenure. The issue was penciled by Steve Dillon, with Stuart Immonen providing the cover; Dillon was an unusual artistic choice for the Ultimate line, and his expressive, grounded style drew specific notice from readers collecting the eventual 'Hard Lessons' trade. The editorial team listed on the issue includes Ralph Macchio, John Barber, and Nicole Wiley, reflecting Marvel's standard Ultimate imprint editorial structure of the mid-2000s. Vaughan had originally been slated to collaborate with film director Bryan Singer on a twelve-issue run, but Singer's commitment to Superman Returns made that impossible, so Vaughan completed his run solo.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Syndicate (Ultimate Universe) — conjoined twins Luke and Matthew — created by Brian K. Vaughan and Steve Dillon; they possess psi-resistance and an electromagnetic pulse heartbeat.
  • First cameo appearance of an Ultimate Universe version of Warlock (Earth-1610), who attacks New Jersey and is contained by the X-Men.
  • Written by Brian K. Vaughan; interior art by Steve Dillon; cover pencils and inks by Stuart Immonen; colors by Justin Ponsor (cover) and Paul Mounts (interior); lettered by Chris Eliopoulos.
  • Published April 13, 2005 (release date), with a June 2005 cover date, as part of the ongoing Ultimate X-Men series (vol. 1, 2001–2009).
  • Story title: 'A Hard Lesson' — a standalone, Xavier-centric single issue that opens the broader 'Hard Lessons' arc spanning issues #58–60 and Ultimate X-Men Annual #1.
  • Syndicate's biology — interlinked brain matter rendering them immune to telepathic control, combined with an EMP-generating heart — forces Xavier to lead non-powered civilian hostages rather than rely on his mutant abilities, a deliberate narrative inversion of the standard X-Men formula.
  • The issue was reprinted in the digest-format Ultimate Spider-Man and X-Men Vol. 1 #48, extending its reach to younger and international audiences.
  • Collected in Ultimate X-Men Vol. 12: Hard Lessons (trade paperback, Marvel, 2006), which also includes issues #59–60 and Ultimate X-Men Annual #1; a hardcover edition collecting both 'Hard Lessons' and 'Magnetic North' was also published.
