About this Issue

Ultimate Wolverine #2 delivers the key origin flashback that explains how the Maker dismantled the Weapon X program on Earth-6160, murdering its director Truett Hudson ("The Professor") in cold blood and redirecting the science of Adamantium bonding into his own Directorate X apparatus — making it an essential piece of the new Ultimate Universe's world-building architecture. The issue also marks the first full on-page appearance of Truett Hudson (Earth-6160), an Ultimate Universe reimagining of the classic Weapon X scientist, who exists here only long enough to be erased by the Maker in a chilling demonstration of how that villain rewrote history. By inverting Logan's heroic mythology — placing him as a brainwashed weapon of oppression rather than a freedom fighter — the series stakes out a genuinely darker premise for the character than any prior mainstream Wolverine title. The issue is part of the broader second Ultimate Universe line (Earth-6160), a 2024–2026 initiative that gave Marvel's marquee characters clean-slate reimaginings under a shared editorial umbrella.

History

The series was created by writer Chris Condon, best known for the indie noir series That Texas Blood and The Enfield Gang Massacre, and artist Alessandro Cappuccio, who had previously collaborated with Jed MacKay on Moon Knight. Editor Wil Moss shepherded the book under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski as part of the expanding Earth-6160 publishing line. Condon has confirmed in interviews that the series was conceived from the outset as a 12-issue story, though it was later extended; the creative partnership between Condon and Cappuccio was evidently non-negotiable — Condon has stated publicly that he would not have continued past issue 12 without Cappuccio returning for the extension arc.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released February 19, 2025; cover-dated April 2025; rated T+ (ages 13 and up).
  • Written by Chris Condon; art and cover by Alessandro Cappuccio; colors by Bryan Valenza; letters by Cory Petit; edited by Wil Moss.
  • First appearance of Truett Hudson (Earth-6160), known as 'The Professor' — the Weapon X program director on Earth-6160, who is killed by the Maker in a 30-years-prior flashback that runs through this issue.
  • The flashback reveals the Maker (Reed Richards of Earth-1610) personally murdered Truett Hudson and destroyed Weapon X before it could experiment on Logan, then repurposed that science through Directorate X — the program run by Dr. Alonya Prostovich that eventually created the Ultimate Wolverine / Winter Soldier.
  • Colossus (Piotr Rasputin), Magik (Illyana Rasputina), and Omega Red (Arkady Rossovich) appear as the Maker's Council rulers of the Eurasian Republic, field-testing Logan against their own soldiers to gauge his combat effectiveness.
  • The Maker (Reed Richards, Earth-1610) appears; his cameo in the flashback is categorized as an Earth-1610 character operating within Earth-6160, underscoring the cross-dimensional continuity thread central to the Ultimate Universe relaunch.
  • The issue is set in-universe during the real-calendar month of its release (February 2025), consistent with the Earth-6160 editorial policy of operating on a fixed rather than sliding timescale.
  • Collected in the trade paperback Ultimate Wolverine Vol. 1: The Winter Soldier, which reprints issues #1–6 alongside material from the one-shot Ultimate Universe: One Year In (December 2024).
