About this Issue

Ultimate Wolverine #16 closes out the first and only solo Wolverine title in Marvel's second Ultimate Universe imprint (Earth-6160), making it the narrative capstone of a 16-issue run that reimagined Logan not as a hero but as a brainwashed government assassin styled after the Winter Soldier — a concept unlike any prior Wolverine solo series. As issue #12 of the 17-part Ultimate Endgame crossover event, it delivers the direct story bridge into Ultimate Endgame #5, meaning the fates of Earth-6160's Logan, Jean Grey, and Illyana Rasputin are resolved here before the entire Ultimate Universe line concluded in 2026. The series used its final arc to interrogate a shared theme of trauma across both its protagonist and antagonist — Logan evolving from weapon to willing self-sacrificer, while Illyana's path into dark sorcery is given a tragic origin — placing this finale squarely in the tradition of character-driven X-Men conclusions. Colossus's infernal resurrection at Magik's hands in Limbo represents one of the most visually and thematically extreme reinventions of the character in the Earth-6160 timeline, anchoring the issue's horror-inflected identity.

History

The series was announced at the 2024 New York Comic Con as the final major ongoing title in Marvel's second Ultimate Universe line, with writer Chris Condon — previously known for the crime horror series That Texas Blood — and artist Alessandro Cappuccio, who had prior collaborative chemistry from Moon Knight, forming the creative team. The book launched in January 2025 following a character debut in the one-shot Ultimate Universe: One Year In (December 2024), and was conceived as a horror-adjacent X-Men story embedded in the Eurasian Republic corner of Earth-6160 where the Rasputin family — Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red — served on the Maker's Council. Issue #16 carried a FOC date of March 16, 2026 and was released April 15, 2026, with editor Wil Moss and editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski overseeing the close of the line.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Issue #16 is the final issue of Ultimate Wolverine (2025), the solo series set on Earth-6160 — the second Ultimate Universe — written by Chris Condon and illustrated by Alessandro Cappuccio, with colors by Bryan Valenza and letters by Travis Lanham.
  • Published April 15, 2026 (cover-dated June 2026), it functions as tie-in #12 of 17 in the Ultimate Endgame crossover event, with its story feeding directly into Ultimate Endgame #5.
  • The core conflict of the issue takes Logan (Wolverine) and Jean Grey (Phoenix/Earth-6160) into Limbo, the demonic dimension ruled by Illyana Rasputina (Magik), for the series' climactic showdown — Logan having been Illyana's enforcer when the series began.
  • Colossus (Piotr Rasputin/Earth-6160) undergoes an infernal resurrection in Limbo orchestrated by Magik, a transformation driven by his sworn vow to protect his sister Illyana and fueled by dark sorcery rather than mutant power alone.
  • The series arc resolves the thematic throughline established in issue #1: Logan started as Illyana's brainwashed weapon and ends the series as a figure willing to descend into Limbo to save others, with Jean Grey and Sentinel One (David Haller) at his side.
  • Chris Condon's final arc across the closing issues focused on the backstory of Illyana Rasputin — exploring the trauma that made her willing to inflict suffering on other mutants, framed in parallel to Logan's own history of victimization.
  • Five variant covers were issued for this finale: a 1:25 by Alex Lins, a 1:100 by Ario Anindito, a 1:500 by CAFU, a Francesco Manna variant, and a Marcos Martín 'Ultimate Finale' variant.
  • Characters appearing on Earth-6160 in this issue per the Marvel Database include James Howlett (Logan/Wolverine), Jean Grey (Phoenix), Illyana Rasputin (Magik), Piotr Rasputin (Colossus), David Haller (Sentinel One), and Senna; other series characters such as Gambit (Remy LeBeau), Sprite (Kitty Pryde), Widow (Natalia Romanova), Sabretooth (Victor Creed), and the Maker (Reed Richards/Earth-1610) appear in the series catalog but are not confirmed as appearing specifically in issue #16 by the Marvel Database listing.
