Ultimate Spider-Man #60
Mark Bagley's cover for this 2004 installment makes an immediate impression — a massive, glowing symbiote creature with a jagged, luminous maw and writhing tendrils fills the entire frame, radiating something between menace and raw, primal energy. Subtitled "Carnage: Part One of Five," this issue signals the start of a five-part arc from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mark Bagley, one of Marvel's most consistent creative partnerships of the era. If that cover creature is any indication of what's in store across the arc, readers were in for something genuinely unsettling.
