Marvel publisher Bill Jemas conceived the Ultimate line because he believed that four-plus decades of 616-universe continuity had made Spider-Man effectively unreadable for new audiences; his working outline for the project was eventually handed to Eisner Award-winning independent creator Brian Michael Bendis, who discarded much of Jemas's draft and rebuilt the story as a naturalistic, thought-bubble-free narrative that read more like a television drama than a classic cape comic. To anchor the book visually for readers already comfortable with Spider-Man, Jemas recruited Mark Bagley — a veteran of the mainline Amazing Spider-Man — who initially agreed only to a six-issue commitment before being persuaded by his own retailer to stay on. Editor Ralph Macchio oversaw the launch, and the 48-page first issue (cover-dated November 2000, on sale September 6, 2000) expanded the original eleven-page Amazing Fantasy #15 origin into a slow-burn, character-first opener that didn't even show Peter in costume.
