Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #18

Part of Marvel's 2013 "United We Stand" arc, this issue of Ultimate Comics All-New Spider-Man delivers one of the most quietly devastating cover images in the run — Miles Morales in his battered black-and-red suit, collapsed on hands and knees across a sun-bleached desert landscape, his suit torn and scorched as if he's pushed himself far past his limit. David Marquez and Justin Ponsor strip away the web-swinging spectacle to give us something raw and grounded: a young hero at the edge of his endurance, the vast empty dunes stretching out around him. Brian Michael Bendis's ongoing exploration of what it truly costs to be Spider-Man feels palpable in every scraped panel of that suit.
