History

The series was announced at Marvel's Next Big Thing panel during New York Comic Con 2023, with Bryan Edward Hill (known for prior Black Panther-adjacent work including the Killmonger miniseries) writing and Stefano Caselli providing interior art and covers. It launched in February 2024 as the second title in Marvel's revived Ultimate Universe line, set in the newly established Earth-6160 continuity born out of Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch's Ultimate Invasion. For issue #6, Caselli stepped back from interior duties and was replaced by Carlos Nieto (who had already contributed on earlier issues), while Caselli retained the cover assignment; colorist David Curiel and letterer VC's Cory Petit remained consistent throughout the arc. Hill has discussed in interviews his intentional restraint in reinventing the IP, choosing to fracture only some of the 'minor rules' of the Black Panther mythology while keeping the broader character truths intact — a philosophy that critics both praised and questioned by the time this arc-closing issue arrived.
