About this Issue

Ultimate Black Panther #3 is the first issue to place the Earth-6160 versions of Storm (Ororo Munroe) and Killmonger (Erik Killmonger) at the center of the narrative, marking the moment their redesigned Ultimate personas — conceived as a freedom-fighting couple across the African continent rather than adversaries — become fully integrated into the Wakandan drama. The issue is also structurally significant as the point where writer Bryan Hill's series begins to differentiate itself from the 616 continuity, introducing a mysterious ancient power source — a glowing green element housed in a previously unknown underground temple — that rivals Vibranium in importance and sets the overarching mystery of the run in motion. Within Marvel's 2024 Ultimate Universe relaunch, the third issue of this series represents a key building block in demonstrating that the new line was willing to reconceive classic character dynamics wholesale, casting longtime antagonist Killmonger as an uneasy ally rather than a villain.

History

Ultimate Black Panther is written by Bryan Edward Hill — whose prior Wakanda-adjacent credits include the 2018 Killmonger miniseries — and illustrated by Stefano Caselli, a Marvel veteran whose earlier work spans Secret Warriors, Avengers: The Initiative, and a collaboration with Jonathan Hickman on the oversized Ultimate Universe #1 that immediately preceded this line. The series launched in February 2024 as the second ongoing in Marvel's revived Ultimate Universe imprint, itself born from Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch's Ultimate Invasion event, and issue #3 shipped April 17, 2024, with a cover date of June 2024. Character designs for the Earth-6160 versions of Storm and Killmonger were created by artist Peach Momoko, who blended modern aesthetics with pan-African tribal references; those design sheets were publicly released alongside the issue's cover reveal in late 2023 as part of Marvel's pre-launch promotion.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released April 17, 2024 (cover date: June 2024); written by Bryan Hill, drawn by Stefano Caselli, colored by David Curiel, lettered by Cory Petit.
  • First spotlight/featured appearance of Ultimate Storm (Ororo Munroe, Earth-6160) and Ultimate Killmonger (Erik Killmonger, Earth-6160) in a starring role — the issue's official tagline is 'ENTER…STORM AND KILLMONGER!' — though both characters debuted in Ultimate Black Panther #1.
  • On Earth-6160, Storm and Killmonger are reimagined as a romantic couple and pan-African freedom fighters, a fundamental inversion of Killmonger's traditional role as T'Challa's arch-nemesis.
  • The issue introduces a major new story element: an ancient underground temple near Wakanda containing a large, glowing green orb/element that Killmonger and Storm reveal to T'Challa as the true object Moon Knight's forces are seeking — framed as a power potentially greater than Vibranium.
  • A parallel subplot inside Wakanda depicts Shuri and Okoye coming to physical blows over T'Challa's unexplained absence, establishing early political tension within the Wakandan inner circle.
  • Character designs for the Earth-6160 versions of Storm and Killmonger — showcased prominently in this issue's variant cover and promotional materials — were created by artist Peach Momoko, who described blending 'modern and tribal' aesthetics.
  • The issue received a second printing, with at least six variant covers including a 1:10 Peach Momoko design variant, a 1:25 Skan Srisuwan variant, a Joshua Cassara variant, and a BossLogic 'Ultimate Special' variant.
  • Ultimate Black Panther is set on Earth-6160 and was the second series launched in Marvel's 2024 Ultimate Universe initiative, following Ultimate Spider-Man (January 2024) and preceding Ultimate X-Men (March 2024).
