After the death of her drunken, abusive, coal-miner father, Mary moves to Pittsburgh. She's befriended by Joyce, but Joyce is angered when she catches Mary being kissed by her own boyfriend Larry. Later, Joyce thanks Mary, because she's now marrying a wealthier man. At Joyce's wedding, Mary is reunited with her mother: Larry brought her to live with them, after he and Mary wed.
