Alice grows up in the slum area of West Madison Street, Chicago, losing both of her parents to “filth and poverty.” She gets a job in a store and moves out, vowing to “marry for money” and never return. She falls for Douglas, whom she believes is a wealthy doctor, only to learn he’s just an intern. Alice is upset when he turns down a staff position to practice medicine in “the filthy, smelly slums.” However, she understands the importance of his work and they will marry.
