“The Last Embrace”

True Secrets #10 brings the heartache and drama of postwar romance to vivid life, with a cover scene that says it all: a young woman lies devastated in bed, clutching a letter signed "Sorry I haven't written… just got married… Regards, Nicky," while a thought bubble above her replays the tender farewell — Nicky promising to return and marry her once he makes good. This October 1951 issue wears its emotional stakes right on its sleeve, promising stories "taken from life," including "The Pledge of Pamela Dixon" and "Jealousy." If you have a soft spot for the golden era of romance comics, this one delivers genuine feeling in every panel teased on that cover.

Pamela is mentored in her job as a department store buyer by "career woman" Beverly, and promises “nothing’s going to come between my job and me!” She violently rejects salesman Dick when he asks for a date, and he’s fired as a result. Pamela discovers she’s in love with him, and doesn’t want to be like Beverly, “all dried up like an old prune!” She marries Dick.
