Jill is a square and proud of it. When she meets Jerry at a musical evening, she and her friends find him to be a thug and she tells him so. But he cuts his hair, buys new clothes, brings his fiddle and plays music he hates in an attempt to fit in with the musical group just so he can be near her. Her friends still don't approve of him and he leaves. Jill realizes her friends are snobs who wouldn't let Jerry fit in and she runs after him.
