A small motor-boat collides with a launch lying at anchor and the men on board barely make it to shore as Jane watches helplessly. She invites the two strangers to come home with her to change into some dry clothes. She and the older man have no way of knowing that he is her father. He had left Jane's mother eighteen years earlier without knowing that she was expecting a child.
