Another school year opens at St. Marks for Chuck White. As he heads to the first football practice of the season, he confides in his teammates that he wants to make athletics his career and someday be a great coach. During a field play, Jonesy distracts Chuck by running the wrong way and Chuck collides with other players and is knocked unconscious. He's rushed to the hospital, where X-rays are taken. The Dean asks Father Carroll to get in touch with Chuck's parents, but is told that they're in Panama. Fr. Carroll is told that Chuck's sports days and perhaps walking days may be over.
