“The Sacrifice”

The penultimate chapter of Joe Kubert's six-issue prehistoric saga finds the cave-man Tor crouching defiantly in a rocky grotto, surrounded on all sides by a pack of snapping, predatory dinosaurs — a large crested theropod looming to his left, more closing in from behind, and a smaller raptor-like creature darting in at his right. Kubert's cover linework (pencils and inks all his own) captures the raw tension of a lone human refusing to yield against creatures far larger than himself, framed by the cave entrance like a stage set for something fierce. With "The Sacrifice" as the story's title, this 2008 DC issue promises that the prehistoric world Kubert has been crafting all series long is about to demand something meaningful from its determined hero.
