"Tops Comics" #1 is an anthology featuring multiple stories. "The Black Orchid" by Albert and Florence Magarian follows Diana Dawn, a district attorney's secretary who secretly operates as the masked vigilante the Black Orchid, solving crimes with the aid of a magic ring; in the visible pages, she discovers papers in a dead doctor's office revealing a startling discovery about plastic surgery. A second story involves test pilot "Ace" Kelly, who experiences a harrowing plunge toward Earth in a new secret military aircraft but manages to regain control and pull up to safety. The issue also includes "Dum-Dum the Human Cannonball," a humorous story about a circus performer launched from a cannon, and a comedic segment featuring men discussing eyeglasses and encounters at a train station and with a doctor.
