“Hat's Off”

This Charlton Comics entry in the Hanna-Barbera Top Cat series captures the gang in a perfectly sunny summer moment — Top Cat and two of his alley-cat pals perch atop a wooden fence, gleefully chomping into an enormous watermelon slice while seeds fly everywhere. Down below, a frantic blue cat scrambles to corral a whole watermelon that's rolled away, making for a wonderfully chaotic scene brought to life by Ray Dirgo's clean, expressive linework. With Joe Gill scripting and the promise of "All New" stories at just 20 cents, this 1973 issue is a cheerful slice of animated-comics fun.
