About this Issue

Timeless #1 (2022) marks the second installment of what Marvel quickly established as an annual year-end tradition: a giant-sized Kang-centric one-shot that simultaneously tells a self-contained character story and teases the publisher's publishing roadmap for the coming year. Beyond its structural novelty, the issue delivers the first appearances of Myrddin and his Arthurian-themed ensemble the Twilight Court — characters whose conflict with Kang over the so-called 'Missing Moment' seeded Jed MacKay's subsequent Avengers run. The issue also put Kang in a genuinely unfamiliar narrative posture — as the hunted rather than the hunter — a character inversion that felt fresh for one of Marvel's oldest recurring antagonists.

History

Writer Jed MacKay returned to helm this follow-up to his own well-received 2021 Timeless one-shot, this time paired with pencillers Salvador Larroca, Greg Land, and Patch Zircher, with Frank D'Armata on colors and Ariana Maher lettering, all under editor Tom Brevoort. MacKay has described the editorial process as collaborative with the wider Marvel offices — story teams submitted concepts and images they wanted previewed, which MacKay then wove into the fabric of Kang's time-spanning journey. The issue went on sale December 28, 2022, carrying a February 2023 cover date, and featured a main cover by Kael Ngu alongside several variant covers including work by Alex Maleev, Carmen Carnero, Terry Dodson, and Todd Nauck.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Myrddin (a future antagonist of Kang styled after the Arthurian wizard Merlin) and his team the Twilight Court, whose members include Mordred the Witch-Knight, Parsifal the Icon, Artur the King, Lancelot the Star, Galehaut the God, Bedivere the Engineer, and Bercilak the Construct.
  • Written by Jed MacKay with art by Salvador Larroca, Greg Land, and Patch Zircher; colors by Frank D'Armata; letters by Ariana Maher; edited by Tom Brevoort; main cover by Kael Ngu.
  • The central narrative device — Kang searching for the 'Missing Moment,' a period of time inaccessible even to him — directly set up MacKay's 2023 Avengers run, making this issue a functional story prologue to that ongoing series.
  • The issue is the second in an annual Timeless one-shot format that MacKay inaugurated in 2021; both issues use Kang's time-scanning technology as a narrative frame to preview upcoming Marvel storylines across the next twelve months.
  • The Marvel Fandom Database credits this issue as Timeless Vol. 2 #1, distinguishing it from the 2021-released Timeless Vol. 1 #1; the collector market universally refers to it as 'Timeless #1 (2022)' based on its release year.
  • The issue also features cameo-level teaser glimpses of future Marvel characters and story developments for 2023, including a future version of Power Man (a Luke Cage-derived hero with combined Sentry, Hulk, and Iron Fist powers) and a future Iron Man figure named James Stark.
  • Kang is depicted unmasked throughout significant portions of the story — a visual choice noted by multiple reviewers as an uncommon humanizing treatment for the character.
  • The first Timeless one-shot (2021, released December 2021) received a second printing after strong reader demand, which Marvel cited as context for commissioning this sequel installment.
