The Messenger stops a mugging and reflects on his origin. Three years prior, Jason van Wynne is working on a secret project when he's abducted. Vincino holds Wynne's girlfriend Tricia hostage to force him to finish his formula so he can steal it. Wynne's serum stimulates adrenal glands to produce super powers. After taking the formula himself, Wynne attempts to save Tricia, but Vincino kills her. An FBI agent also "kills" Wynne, but this is a ploy for Wynne to return under an assumed identity. Wynne becomes the Messenger but has only recently returned to crime fighting after losing interest.
