About this Issue

ThunderCats/The Powerpuff Girls #2 is the second chapter of the first-ever comic book crossover between two of Saturday-morning animation's most distinctive superhero ensembles — a pairing made possible only after Dynamite Entertainment secured the licenses for both properties from Warner Bros. Discovery. The series carries genuine cultural weight as a meeting of a 1980s fantasy-action franchise with a late-1990s comedy-superhero one, a generational collision that no publisher had previously attempted in comic form. Issue #2 deepens the story's central dramatic conceit — Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup navigating Third Earth without their Chemical X powers — forcing Ganucheau to develop the trio as adventure-story protagonists rather than as super-powered shortcuts to victory, which represents a meaningful creative departure from how the Powerpuff Girls are typically written.

History

The crossover grew out of Dynamite's broader 2023 agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery to publish comics based on multiple classic animated franchises, which brought both ThunderCats and The Powerpuff Girls under one roof for the first time. Editor Nate Cosby and writer Paulina Ganucheau developed the core concept together, with Ganucheau then recruiting her longtime friend and collaborator Coleman Engle as artist; Engle described being 'very thankful to be included' after Ganucheau and Cosby had already worked out the premise. A Free Comic Book Day #0 issue (May 3, 2025) served as the series preview before the monthly run launched, and issue #1 itself was delayed from its original June 4, 2025 date — first to July 9, then to July 23 — before the regular schedule stabilized with #2 shipping August 13, 2025.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published by Dynamite Entertainment; on sale August 13, 2025 (digital and print), 32 pages, rated Teen.
  • Written by Paulina Ganucheau; art and colors by Coleman Engle; lettered by Jeff Eckleberry; colored by Kendall Goode (series colorist confirmed in collected-edition credits).
  • Issue #2 is the second installment of a four-issue limited series; the complete story was subsequently collected in a trade paperback (ISBN 9781524129095, published by Simon & Schuster/Dynamite, 112 pages).
  • The story follows directly from #1: stranded on Third Earth with their powers nullified, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have allied with Tygra and Snarf to find a way home, while also confronting a plague of crystal-possessed creatures and tracking a mysterious signal aboard a giant Arietta bird.
  • Issue #2 continues the series' main villain arc involving Chilla (a Lunatak), who is ultimately revealed as the architect behind the crystal-possession scheme and the disappearance of the ThunderCats — a plot thread seeded here and resolved in #4.
  • The crossover marks the first time ThunderCats and Powerpuff Girls characters have shared a comic book story; both franchises previously had separate comic histories (ThunderCats at Marvel/Star Comics and DC/Wildstorm; Powerpuff Girls at DC and IDW), but never crossed over.
  • Cover artists for #2 include Paulina Ganucheau, Coleman Engle, Coran Kizer Stone, Saowee, and Nicoletta Baldari across multiple standard and variant editions.
  • The series sits outside the continuity of Dynamite's main ThunderCats ongoing (written by Declan Shalvey), with the ThunderCats fandom wiki noting the crossover 'seems to feature a non-canon story.'
