About this Issue

ThunderCats #4 (May 2024) serves as the concluding chapter of the Dynamite series' inaugural story arc — the first sustained ThunderCats comic arc in over a decade — bringing Lion-O into his first direct confrontation with Mumm-Ra and delivering the revelation of a traitor within the team's ranks. The issue also caps off the introduction of Calica, an original character created for this series, making the Dynamite run the third ThunderCats comic franchise in history to introduce an all-new ThunderCat with no animated-series precedent, following Lynxana in the Star/Marvel run and Bobcat in the Wildstorm/DC run. As the arc finale, it established the dramatic and character-driven template — centered on Lion-O's coming-of-age as a reluctant, inexperienced leader — that would define the larger 'ThunderVerse' Dynamite subsequently built around the property. Its closure of the opening arc directly enabled the franchise's rapid expansion into spin-off titles and crossover events.

History

The series was announced at New York Comic Con 2023 as part of a new licensing agreement between Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery, with writer Declan Shalvey, artist Drew Moss, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry confirmed as the core creative team at that announcement. Editor Nate Cosby served as the key editorial architect, working closely with Shalvey to shape the series' creative direction and 'ThunderVerse' framework. Both Shalvey and Moss publicly described themselves as childhood fans of the original Rankin-Bass animated series, and Moss noted that Cosby's encouragement helped him navigate the anxiety of redesigning beloved characters for a new comics audience. Issue #4 was solicited in March 2024 and shipped on May 22, 2024, completing the four-issue opening arc that had launched with ThunderCats #1 in February 2024.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Writer: Declan Shalvey; Artist: Drew Moss; Letterer: Jeff Eckleberry; Editor: Nate Cosby; Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment.
  • On-sale date: May 22, 2024 (Dynamite's own listing notes an earlier internal date of May 15 for some SKUs; the wide release was May 22, 2024).
  • Concludes the first story arc of the Dynamite ThunderCats ongoing series — a four-issue arc spanning February–May 2024.
  • First direct encounter between Lion-O and Mumm-Ra in this continuity, with Mumm-Ra attacking in his mummified form (not his 'Ever-Living' transformed state) — a deliberate departure from the animated series' first confrontation.
  • The issue reveals the identity of the spy/traitor within the ThunderCats and ends with the Eye of Thundera stolen and Snarf left wounded, setting up ongoing story threads.
  • Features the in-continuity appearance of Calica — an original character introduced in ThunderCats #2 — whose ambiguous loyalties (survivor of a crashed Mu'Tant ship with ties to Mumm-Ra) drive the arc's central conflict.
  • The issue shipped with over 20 cover variants, including standard covers by David Nakayama (Cover A), Lucio Parrillo, Declan Shalvey, Jae Lee & June Chung, and Ivan Tao, plus multiple foil, virgin, ratio incentive, and store-exclusive editions.
  • The content of issues #1–#4 (plus a Cheetara spotlight in #5) was collected in a Direct Market Special trade paperback released on July 17, 2024 — limited to a single printing and offered exclusively to comic shops.
