About this Issue

ThunderCats #3 (April 2024) is the third chapter of Dynamite Entertainment's widely celebrated relaunch of the 1980s Rankin/Bass franchise — the first new ongoing ThunderCats comic in decades and part of a landmark licensing deal between Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products. The issue deepens the series' boldest ongoing story beat: the arrival of Calica, a brand-new Thunderian character whose design (inspired by calico cats) and ambiguous loyalties inject a genuine tension between Lion-O and his teammates that had not existed in prior comics or animated iterations. At a moment when the franchise was riding extraordinary commercial momentum from its debut, issue #3 demonstrated that the creative team could sustain that energy through genuine character drama rather than nostalgia alone, helping to establish the series as a legitimate expansion of ThunderCats lore rather than a simple retread. The issue also carries forward a shocking plot thread introduced in #1 — the Sword of Omens lying shattered and Jaga held prisoner by Mumm-Ra — signaling that this run was committed to high-stakes, serialized storytelling.

History

Dynamite announced the series at New York Comic Con 2023 after securing a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to publish comics based on classic WBD properties. The creative team of writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss — both self-described ThunderCats superfans — developed the book together, with Shalvey also contributing covers; colorists Chiara Di Francia and Martina Pignedoli, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry rounded out the production team, with Nate Cosby serving as editor. The series launched in February 2024 to extraordinary direct-market demand, with #1 requiring multiple printings before #3 even hit shelves, providing the kind of commercial tailwind that rarely accompanies a licensed relaunch at an independent publisher.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Issue #3 went on sale April 10, 2024, published by Dynamite Entertainment as part of an ongoing series launched in February 2024 under a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products.
  • The issue's story is titled 'Treasures of Thundera' and was written by Declan Shalvey with art by Drew Moss.
  • The central conflict of the issue involves Lion-O's growing attraction to Calica — a new Thunderian character introduced in the prior issue — while Panthro, Cheetara, and Tygra remain deeply suspicious of her origins and motives, threatening to fracture the team's fragile unity on Third Earth.
  • Calica is a wholly original character created by Shalvey and Moss for this run: her design is based on calico cats, featuring a tri-color fur pattern and a distinctive black patch around one eye; she was found among the wreckage of a crashed Mu'Tant ship.
  • Key Collector Comics designates the April 2024 issue (#3) as the key first appearance of Calica; however, multiple publisher press releases and trade outlets reported her as debuting in issue #2 (March 13, 2024) — this discrepancy is flagged below.
  • The issue features cover contributions from David Nakayama (Cover A), Lucio Parrillo, Declan Shalvey, Jae Lee & June Chung, Ivan Tao, Drew Moss (Panthro design variant), and Rob Liefeld (FOC variant), with numerous incentive and virgin editions.
  • The Action Figure variant for this issue spotlights Snarf, and preview pages confirmed a reunion scene between Snarf and Lion-O inside the issue.
  • Issues #1–5 of this run, including #3, were later collected in the trade paperback ThunderCats Vol. 1: Omens (July 2024), with the initial Direct Market Special edition limited to a single printing.
